Help Japan


The Strongest earthquakes on record due to the devastation caused by a 9-magnitude earthquake off the east coast of Japan on Friday 11 March and the resulting tsunami.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 13.5 kilometres, approximately 130 kilometres from the coast, (373 kilometres north-east of Tokyo) at 14:46 local time. The current official death toll stands as 1046 people, with a further 1107 reported missing. However, this is likely to increase as rescue teams are able to access and assess affected regions.

As of March 13, an estimated of 1000 were injured and there have been 1,800 houses were destroyed in Minamisoma City of Fukushima Prefecture. Around 300,000 were evacuated, of which around 60,000 to 70,000 people have evacuated to about 200 shelters in Sendai, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. Electricity supply remains cut to over 5 million households, while a further 1 million homes are without water supply.
